The department has urged parents and guardians to apply online at www.gdeadmissions.gov.za in order to secure their child’s place in a Gauteng public school in 2024. From 15 June 2023 to 14 July 2023, they will receive SMS notifications of placement offers to accept or decline.
How do I find out if my child has been accepted to a school in Gauteng?
The Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) claims to have received the most applications since the launch of its online admissions system in 2016.
This is despite technical difficulties at the start of the 2024 online admissions cycle, according to the GDE.
According to the GDE, 764 062 applications for grades, one through eight were submitted and processed. According to the report, the department must place a total of 332 477 students (157 697 in grade one and 174 780 in grade eight).
The department will begin the placement of learners in their respective schools today and will continue until November 30.
According to the GDE, placement offers will be sent to parents via SMS and must be accepted within seven school days.
When a placement offer is made, applicant’s parents should log in to their profile on the GDE admissions site to accept it as final or accept it while they wait for other offers.
“SMSes will be sent out on a continual basis until the end of the placement period on 30 November 2022. This means that while not all applicants will receive an SMS on the first day of the placement period, they should expect one between October 3 and November 30, 2022.
“If parents and guardians have not received an SMS, they don’t need to panic as they are welcome to use their credentials to log on to gdeadmissions.gov.za and check whether they have received an offer or not.
“In the event, an SMS states that your child has been placed at a certain school, this will be regarded as successful placement to the mentioned school.
“A parent or guardian will not need to access the system to accept an offer in that regard because the child will be placed at the mentioned school.”
The provincial education department emphasizes that the criteria used for placement are based on the learner’s home address within the school’s feeder zone, siblings at a school, work address within the school’s feeder zone, a home address within 30 kilometers of the school, and home address beyond 30 kilometers of the school.
It goes on to say that placement is also determined by each school’s capacity. “Applicants will be offered placement offers from schools with available space when schools reach full capacity.”
